Historical Overview
The monastic community of Meteora began in the 11th century when the first hermits settled in the caves of the rocks. In the 14th century, the monk Athanasios Koinovitis from Mount Athos founded the first monastery, the Great Meteoron, on the "broad rock." Later, the Serbian king Symeon Uroš and his son Ioasaf contributed to the expansion and prosperity of the monastery, making it the wealthiest and most prominent in the area.

Of the 24 monasteries established in Meteora, six remain active today, offering visitors a unique experience. These monasteries are:
