Meteora, located in Thessaly, Greece, is a complex of impressive rock formations atop which centuries-old monasteries are built. These rocks were formed approximately 60 million years ago from river deposits, which, through geological processes, transformed into towering pillars rising over 400 meters above ground level.

One of the most ideal places for a day trip!

Historical Overview

The monastic community of Meteora began in the 11th century when the first hermits settled in the caves of the rocks. In the 14th century, the monk Athanasios Koinovitis from Mount Athos founded the first monastery, the Great Meteoron, on the "broad rock." Later, the Serbian king Symeon Uroš and his son Ioasaf contributed to the expansion and prosperity of the monastery, making it the wealthiest and most prominent in the area.
